That’s about the same a TTS with the auto box and the additional Pro Line + package costs where I live, and that’s already including VAT and €8k in gas guzzler tax. The one you’ve got there is merely a TT. That’s steep.

This tax thing really grinds my gears. syncromesh that is. :) the above picture represents the breakdown of the total cost for a new or imported car in The Glorious Kingdom of Denmark: blue part - the price of the car, red part - TAX!!!!, green part - VAT. And don’t even get me started on the noise regs for tracks. Even gokart tracks get bitchslapped by these rules. Not a great adoptive country for a petrolhead.

This is one of those situations where I would seriously consider immigrating somewhere else, simply to avoid car tax. I occasionally think of leaving Virginia because you pay 4% at the point of sale (on the full value of the car, it doesn’t matter if you traded) and then 2-3% of the appraised value per year as property tax for as long as you own the car. At 65%, wooooo boy.

Yes. Gas guzzler tax is determined by theoretical CO2 emissions/km (=theoretical fuel economy). There are a few thresholds, above those the extra grams of CO2/km will count far more severely. The first 100 or so grams/km are relatively very cheap.
Regular (non-plugin) Prius at 89 grams/km: €1k, Audi TT quattro: €7k, Audi TTS €8k, Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S) €12.5k, BMW 320iA €6k, Cadillac ATS 2.0T (auto) at 191 grams/km €17k (and priced right out of the market), Toyota Land Cruiser 4.6 V8 at 308 grams/km €68k. Yes, €68k in gas guzzler tax alone. That’s $76k US.
Whatever you think of this, and I hate the severity of it, it is effective. Manufacturers who strive for economy are rewarded by consumers with sales, and theoretical fuel economy of new cars has increased dramatically.
edit:
1-82 grams per km: €6 per gram
83-110: €69/g
111-160: €112/g
161-180: €217/g
181+: €434/g

Google tells me that that’s $46,500 US plus $30,000 US taxes. According to Audi USA the TT starts at $40,350, presumably minus “dealer prep” or whatever.
